Profs. Matt Rosseinsky and Charlotte Williams were part of the team, led by Professor Graham Hutchings FRS (Cardiff University), that prepared the Royal Society Policy Briefing Catalysing Change: Defossilising the Chemical Industry. The policy briefing sets the scientific and technology challenges needed to ensure the UK Chemical industry and its downstream customers meet climate and pollution targets. The policy briefing was underpinned by a year of consultations, expert meetings and scientific literature evaluation, supported by a working group with academic, industry and international experts. It highlights the opportunity and also the necessity for the UK to engage in this under-addressed area, tackling the hard-to-defossilise sector with innovative research and translation activity
Together with Professor Hutchings, Matt and Charlotte presented the key outcomes of the report to an audience of over 40 key stakeholders at the launch event on 8 May 2024. They also took part in the subsequent panel discussion, together with Dr Chris Mitchell (SABIC), Professor Anju Massey-Brooker (RSC) and Mr Neil Johnson (Director, Industry – Department of Business and Trade), who also presented the Government perspective on this key area following the launch presentation.
