Ian Howell, Unilever Homecare R&D Director and Industry Lead for Cleaner Futures, attended the launch of China’s first industrylevel detergent carbonfootprint white paper in Guangzhou, where he highlighted the need for systemwide decarbonisation across the laundry sector. The study shows that most emissions come from raw materials and consumer washing habits rather than manufacturing, reinforcing Howell’s call for lowercarbon ingredients, formulations that perform in quick, lowtemperature washes, and products that reduce energy and water use in the home. Howell emphasised how scienceled design and crosssector collaboration can accelerate the transition to lowcarbon cleaning. This international momentum mirrors the mission of Cleaner Futures, highlighting the importance of industry‑academic partnerships, in ensuring that materials research translates into real‑world impact for cleaner, more resilient economies.
